RSD DTL (Datalogger) — specification

In-car data collection

Back to RSD DTL (Datalogger)
01

Overview

RSD DTL turns the driver's phone into a full rally telemetry unit — GPS position, motion sensors and (optionally) a live video feed streamed straight to the team's RSD SRV server station. No wiring loom, no bolt-in sensor kit, no engineering time in the pits: the phone already in the car is the datalogger.

Built to a strict cost-to-value brief, the app runs unattended on stage, gates its own recording so a parked phone produces no noise, and auto-uploads each session the moment signal returns.

02

Key features

✓
Wireless connection to the car
OBD-II and MaxxECU adapters — no fixed wiring in the cockpit.
✓
Live telemetry — WebRTC peer-to-peer
A WebRTC peer-to-peer link to the RSD SRV server station: car ↔ team centre.
✓
Optional live video
Phone camera or an external car-mounted camera, streamed alongside the telemetry.
✓
AutoCal on the move
Orientation re-seats itself after a mount bump — no calibration stop.
✓
Auto-upload after the stage
Recordings land on the server the moment signal returns; the phone tidies up after itself.
✓
Motorsport-ready GPS
Location control and safety signals for driver, co-driver and team.
✓
Full recorded race
The entire live feed is stored on the phone: car data, GPS, drive dynamics.
✓
Movement-gated recording
A parked phone produces no recording noise (≥ 5 km/h, 90 s hold).

Technical specifications

Product
RSD DTL — Rally Stage Director Datalogger
Live data link
WebRTC peer-to-peer data channel to the RSD SRV server station
Co-phone coverage
Planned — the driver's phone and the co-driver/navigator's phone pair up, extending live coverage and dataflow reliability across the car.
Data throughput
~1 Mbps typical over 4G / LTE (telemetry only); ~5 Mbps up with live video
GPS sample rate
1–10 Hz (device-dependent); high-rate IMU on the same channel
Video recording
Original camera resolution — saved locally on the phone, alongside the telemetry recording
Live video transmission
720 × 400 max, H.264, adaptive bitrate — phone or external car-mounted camera
Recording
Local phone storage during the stage; auto-uploaded once the session ends and signal returns
Recording gate
Movement-gated (≥ 5 km/h, 90 s hold)
Companion product
RSD SRV — the desktop server station that receives, renders, analyses and broadcasts the live feed

Field deployment

RSD DTL has been on stage all season with HART — HAN Automotive Rally Team at the Dutch Rally Championship, continuously refined between events. Every service park sends a real-world punchlist back to the workshop — which is how the app grew without a single lab-only feature.

Roadmap disciplines

The architecture leaves headroom for adjacent technical sports — same platform, further tuning.
